The Water

Bro. Frank Slayton

Water: what exactly is water? What makes it so important for us to live? Why was it made in such great abundance? Will we ever run out? Does the Bible tell us important information about water? These are some basic yet interesting questions about water. You probably know the answers to most of them.

However, I would like to engage your mind and heart in this brief yet, fascinating and intriguing study of The Water.

Water is essential for our current existence. Our bodies are made up of approximately 61% water. The chemical formula for water is H20.(Two hydrogen and one oxygen atoms) a very small amounts of the Earth’s water is contained within biological bodies in manufactured products.

The Bible tells us that in the beginning water covered the earth. God then brought up dry land from the water. (Genesis 1:9 -- 10 & 2 Peter 3:5) Water has many symbolic Bible applications. The righteous man is like a tree planted by streams of water Psalms 1:3 and Jeremiah 17:8). I thirst for you as parched land thirst for rain (143:6). Jesus fulfills this need and declares, if you are thirsty, come to me! If you believe in me come and drink!

What's up with the science of The Water? Good question! The hydraulic cycle begins with the evaporation of water from the surface of the ocean. As moist air is lifted, it cools and water vapors condense to form clouds. Moisture is transported around the globe until it returns to the surface as precipitation. Once the water reaches  the ground, one of the two processes may occur; some of the water may evaporate back into the atmosphere or the water may penetrate the surface and become groundwater. Groundwater either seeps its way into the oceans, rivers, and streams, or his release back into the atmosphere through transpiration. The balance of water that remains on the Earth's surface is runoff, which empties into Lakes, rivers and streams and is carried back to the oceans, where the cycle begins again. So are we to drink recycled water? There is no new water… can this be? Why don't we table that chilling thought for a moment and consider how God has made this most important element relative to explaining his biblical truths.

In the closing chapters of the Bible the Lord declares, ”to all who are thirsty I will give those springs of the water of life without charge!" Revelation 21:6). In the description of the heavenly Jerusalem there is a mention of water when it describes the river of the water of life:" the angel showed me a pure river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, coursing down the center of the main street" Revelation 22:1 – 2). The final invitation in the Bible comes to us in similar terms:" let the thirsty ones come anyone who wants to. Let them come and drink the water of life without charge”(22 -- 17).

God in his infinite wisdom provides for each and every one of us water. They could be as rain, snow, mist, fog or bodies of water. This multipurpose substance named water is used in the maintenance, cleansing and sustaining of life. It offers a real and understandable relationship to and in the teachings of Christ.

Jesus has given us a spiritual comparison of water that will quench the thirst of our souls for- ever. The spirit of Jesus is that spiritual water that satisfies the thirst of the human spirit. A simple truth about The Water.
